    Scope and content

Series consists of records relating to matters affecting teaching and faculty staff, including librarians and lab instructors. Activities and topics documented include development of the university's academic policies and procedures; faculty appointments, salaries and economic benefits; renewal, tenure and promotion; leave, retirement and immigration; and negotiations and consultations with the Simon Fraser University Faculty Association (SFUFA) and the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU). For a description of record types, see individual sub-series descriptions.

The arrangement of the material into sub- and sub-sub-series is based on the original file classification system used by the VP Academic's Office to organize the records. Sub- and sub-sub-series are generally arranged chronologically. File lists are arranged chronologically.

Note that from 1970 to 1980, the VP Academic's Office subdivided "Teaching and instructional staff matters" into secondary categories based on function: appointment, salaries, renewal, leave etc. In 1980 it reorganized the system, basing subdivisions instead on type of teaching staff: regular faculty, lab instructors, librarians, visiting and limited term appointments. In 1992, the entire classification system was redesigned, and "teaching and faculty staff matters" was moved to a new location in the file plan, as a secondary under the primary category "VP Academic" (see archival series F-200-2-16).

Note also that in the late 1970s the Office began creating "topical files" on faculty staff matters that to some degree parallel the present series (see archival series F-200-10-4).
