Administrative history

What's Brewing Magazine (BC) is a journal reporting on the British Columbia craft beer movement. It was originally established in 1990 as the newsletter of the Campaign for Real Ale Society of BC (CAMRA BC). CAMRA UK, CAMRA Canada and CAMRA BC all had newsletters by this same name. The BC version was launched by CAMRA BC's Victoria branch in June 1990 under the editorship of Phil Atkinson and typically published six times a year. In 2003 it was re-positioned as the magazine of CAMRA BC as a whole. At the end of 2013 long-time editor Atkinson stepped down. Only two issues were published in 2014 and it appeared that the journal might go under. In 2015 Dave Smith became editor to revive the magazine. What's Brewing remained closely associated with the philosophy and goals of CAMRA, but was now relaunched by Smith as an independent digital-first magazine reporting on the BC craft beer scene generally. In 2020 What's Brewing issued its final print edition, continuing as an online-only service.

Custodial history

Scope and content

Sub-sub-series consists of John Rowling's collection of What's Brewing magazine from the period when the magazine was the newsletter of CAMRA BC. It includes the inaugural issue of June 1990 through to 2010 (Volumes 1 through 20), with an additional single issue from 2013 (Volume 23, Number 5). Note that the volume numbering system repeated "Volume 7" for the years1996 and 1997. This run of issues is extensive but not complete: two issues are missing for 1995 (Vol. 2, Nos. 2-3), and one for 1996 (Vol. 3, No. 3) and one for 2004 (Vol. 14, No. 1).

The sub-sub-series also includes several issues from the post-2015 period, when What's Brewing was re-launched as an independent commercial venture. This run is not complete: it includes two issues from 2015 (Vol. 25), one issue from 2018 (Vol. 28, Issue 3), one from 2019 (Vol. 29, Issue 3), and the 2020 30th Anniversary Special Edition (Vol. 30, Issue 2).

Arrangement

Each volume / year has been assigned a file; files are arranged chronologically. Files 22-25 were retired in Feb 2024. These were occasional copies (not a complete run) of issues published following the 2015 relaunch of What's Brewing as a magazine independent of CAMRA. Because a complete run of the relaunched journal is included in the Dave Smith fonds (series F-314-1-1), these issues were deaccessioned here.

    Associated materials

Rowling's collection of issues in this series represents the main output of What's Brewing from its inception in 1990 up to 2010, during which time it was the newsletter of CAMRA BC. Dave Smith's collection of issues represents the full output of What's Brewing following its relaunch in 2015 as a magazine independent of CAMRA. There is a gap in the Archives' holdings for the period 2011-2014, when the magazine was still the journal of CAMRA. Occasional issues from this block can be found in the Greg Evans fonds in file F-316-7-0-0-2 - Vol. 22, No. 4 (2012) and Vol. 23, No. 5 (2013).
