1910 land mine purchase sale by Dunsmuir notes and research records

Sub-series consists of notes and research records relating to the sale of the company R. Dunsmuir and Sons by James Dunsmuir to Canadian Collieries (Dunsmuir) Ltd. in 1910. In 1910 Canadian Collieries (Dunsmuir) Ltd. also purchased Robert Dunsmuir's company Wellington Colliery Company Ltd. Research materials from this sub-series were used primarily for chapter 2 of Stonebanks’ book.

1912 evictions

File consists of notes and research records relating to Canadian Collieries (Dunsmuir) Ltd.’s evictions of striking coal mine workers from properties on Vancouver Island.

1912-1914 “big strike”

File consists of notes and research records such as photocopied newspaper articles and correspondence relating to Stonebanks’ research about the Great Coal Mine Strike of 1912-1914 on Vancouver Island, in which Ginger Goodwin was an active participant.

2725 Penrith Street

File consist of records such as correspondence, reproduced research records such as land registry deeds, and notes relating to Stonebanks’ research about the home at this address. 2725 Penrith Street was the home of John and Margaret Clark, as well as their daughters Mary and Jean.

A profusion of issues

File consists of a reproduced copy of the article “A Profusion of Issues: Immigrant Labour, the World War, and the Cominco Strike of 1917” by Stanley Howard Scott, presented to the Pacific Northwest Labour History Conference.

After Trail notes and research records

Sub-series consists of Stonebanks’ notes and research records relating to Ginger Goodwin’s life after leaving Trail in 1918, as well as events after his death, notably the investigation into Dan Campbell’s shooting of Goodwin. Research materials in this sub-series correspond primarily to chapters 6 through 9 of Stonebanks’ book.

Aitken and Naylor

File consists of Stonebanks’ notes and research records relating to David Aitken and Joe Naylor, members of the British Columbia Federation of Labour and fellow draft dodgers. Naylor and Aitken were both arrested on charges relating to draft dodging. Naylor was acquitted, while Aitken faced jail time.

Alex McKinnon dynamiting

File consists of notes, research records, correspondence, and an article written by Stonebanks relating to Stonebanks’ research about the August 1913 riot that occurred during the Vancouver Island coal miners’ strike, and specifically the dynamite attack on Alexander Neil McKinnon’s house in Ladysmtih, British Columbia.

Anderson

File consists of research records relating to Thomas Anderson, a man who had worked for Canadian Collieries (Dunsmuir) Ltd. in Cumberland, British Columbia.

Before Cumberland notes and research records

Sub-series consists of Stonebanks’ notes and research records relating to the period of Ginger Goodwin’s life between 1906 and 1910: after he left England, and before he settled in Cumberland. Records include reproduced research records, correspondence, and notes written by Stonebanks on sources consulted. Research materials for this sub-series were used primarily for chapter 2 of Stonebanks’ book.

Bellevue and Goodwins

File consists of records relating to Stonebanks’ genealogical research about Ginger Goodwin, and particularly his connection to Watts Goodwin and members of the Goodwin family currently living in and around Bellevue, Alberta. Records include correspondence, photocopied research records, and notes written by Stonebanks.

Birth certificates

File consists of reproductions of birth certificates and other records such as census and baptism documents for various members of Ginger Goodwin’s family, as well as notes relating to these documents.
