History

Roger Stonebanks was born in Harrow-on-the-Hill, London, England, on March 27, 1940. He immigrated to Canada in 1959, and arrived in British Columbia in 1962, settling in Victoria. Stonebanks worked as a journalist until his retirement in 2000. He wrote for The Canadian Press (1956-1964), the Victoria Daily Times (1964-1980), and the Victoria Times Colonist (1980-2000). He served as the Western Canada Vice-President of the Newspaper Guild (1973-1985), as President and as Vice-President for the Victoria Newspaper Guild (1966-1995), and as Co-Chairperson for the Victoria Joint Council of Newspaper Unions (1971-1995). In 2004, he published the book "Fighting for Dignity: The Ginger Goodwin Story." A portion of the research Stonebanks conducted for this book also appeared in other forms as newspaper articles for various publications.
