Scope and content
Series consists of photographs made by staff photographers in the department. Initially the Information Office relied on the Instructional Media Centre for photographs for its publications, but in 1972 it began to take its own photos. Photography subjects focus on newsworthy people, places and events at Simon Fraser University, as well as portraits of alumni, faculty, staff and students. From 1972 to 2000, the department created and managed its photographs in analog format, as contact sheets and negatives (sub-series 4). Around 2000, the department switched digital photography (sub-series 5, not yet processed).

Arrangement
In the initial arrangement of the fonds in 1998, the Archives organized photographic material into separate sub-series for contact sheets (F-61-1-1) and negatives (F-61-1-2), reflecting the physical separation by which they were originally maintained (in separate sets of binders). Later, an accrual of a duplicate set of contact sheets and negatives was assigned to its own separate sub-series (F-61-1-3). In 2022, the Archives discontinued this arrangement, replacing these three sub-series with a single unit for the analog materials (F-61-1-4) in order to better incorporate descriptive data about the images from the legacy Photo Index database, which is organized by contact sheet number (see sub-series F-61-1-4, notes on Arrangement and Finding aids). The archivist created a separate sub-series (F-61-1-5) for digital photographs created from 2000 on; transfers have been received but not yet processed.
